Arne Slot has taken his first new role after leaving Liverpool, joining UEFA's Technical Observer Group.
The appointment gives Slot an immediate return to elite football after his spell at Anfield ended this summer. It also places him in a UEFA setup that helps monitor and explain developments across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
What the role involves
UEFA says the group uses stats and video assistance to deliver detailed reports on the latest developments in coaching, with those reports shared across the footballing community to provide a dynamic picture of the game.
That makes the job more than a ceremonial title. Slot will be part of a group that helps assess trends and ideas from Europe's top club competitions, giving him a view of how the game is evolving at the highest level.
Slot's career path since Feyenoord
The move is the latest step in a career that has kept Slot close to elite competition. In 2022, he reached the UEFA Conference League final with Feyenoord. Over the following two campaigns, he won an Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup with the Dutch club.
He joined Liverpool in 2024 and went on to lead the club to a second Premier League trophy in five years before his spell ended after a poor defense of the title. At the end of last season, he was dismissed as Liverpool manager.
What Slot said about his future
Slot had been linked with the Netherlands national team vacancy, but he made clear he wanted to stay in club management. He said, “That speculation is incorrect,” and added, “We simply never got to that stage of the talks.”
He also said, “At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training field with my players every day, something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.” Slot added that he has “a lot of respect for the national team and for the KNVB [Dutch Football Association]” and said, “For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me.”
For now, UEFA has given him a role that keeps him connected to the modern game while he weighs whatever comes next in club football.
