Kayvon Thibodeaux trade buzz grows as Giants weigh future during 2026 season

Kayvon Thibodeaux is once again in the trade conversation, and this time the timing matters for the New York Giants. Despite a 3-1 start, the Giants have been hit hard by season-ending injuries to Jaxson Dart and Brian Burns, and that has only sharpened the question of whether they should keep a former top pick who is nearing the end of his deal or turn him into trade value now.

Throughout the offseason, New York reportedly wanted a second-round pick for Thibodeaux. That asking price shows the Giants have at least considered the market, even if their current injuries make the decision more complicated. Jason La Canfora reported that Thibodeaux has been the subject of trade talks across multiple front-office regimes, while also noting that New York needs all the help it can get defensively with its offense decimated by injuries.

The biggest factor is Thibodeaux's contract. The article says the Giants almost certainly will not re-sign him, and he is scheduled to count $15 million in 2027. That makes the calculation pretty straightforward: either New York keeps him for the rest of this season and risks losing him for only a compensatory pick, or it tries to cash in before the market shifts again.

What Thibodeaux has done on the field

The on-field production has not helped his case. Through four games in the 2026 season, Thibodeaux has five tackles, no sacks and one quarterback hit. That quarterback hit came in Week 1. He has just one solo tackle, a 54.0 overall grade at Pro Football Focus and a 49.4 pass-rushing grade, which ranks 108th among 110 qualifying edge defenders.

For a 25-year-old edge defender drafted near the top of the board, that kind of output is not what a team wants to see when trade chatter starts. It also explains why the Giants could be open to a reset if they believe rookie Abdul Carter or 2026 top pick Arvell Reese can grow into larger roles.

What comes next for the Giants

There is still a football reason to keep Thibodeaux. The Giants are 3-1, but they are also dealing with major losses, and depth matters when the season is still alive. La Canfora noted the dilemma directly: whether the Giants want to pay the former top pick roughly $15 million in 2027 and whether Abdul Carter can adequately replace him.

A personnel executive familiar with the coaching staff said Carter is a designated pass-rusher in that defense and added that he is too small to do too much else. The same executive said Arvell Reese may be used more like a Micah Parsons type and moved around, while also adding that he would not want to pay that kind of money for Thibodeaux next year.

That leaves New York in a familiar spot: balancing present need against future value. If Thibodeaux stays, the Giants get another pass rusher for a team that is trying to survive injuries. If he goes, they may finally turn a long-running trade discussion into an actual move.

On Sunday, the Giants will face the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium, and the broader roster picture around Thibodeaux will remain part of the conversation whether or not a deal is made before then.
