Fetuli Paea was handed his first start of the BKT United Rugby Championship season as Dragons RFC made three changes for the Welsh derby against Ospreys at Rodney Parade on Friday evening.
The Tonga international centre comes into a side that beat Scarlets last time out, with the 7.45pm kick-off offering Dragons another quick test in a derby setting. Filo Tiatia has kept the shape of a team that has just found some momentum, but he has also recognised that Ospreys present a different type of challenge after finishing their short tour to Africa.
Tiatia said playing back-to-back derbies is “certainly different”, and that Dragons have watched Ospreys closely in recent weeks. The message from the head coach is clear: this is not a fixture for complacency, even if Dragons arrive with the confidence of a win behind them.
What Dragons are up against
The derby has already been framed by Tiatia as a contest defined by effort and physical resistance. He said Ospreys “scrap and they fight”, adding that they are “super tough around set piece”.
That warning matters because derby matches often turn on territory, contact and discipline rather than simply on attacking fluency. Tiatia also highlighted the threat of the Ospreys maul and scrum, describing them as a side that “will maul for penalties” and whose scrum is “very solid”.
For Dragons, that puts extra value on the details. A first start for Paea is one of the notable selection calls, but the wider issue is whether the home side can back up the Scarlets result with the same control and intensity in a different kind of test.
Paea gets his chance from the start
Paea’s inclusion is the headline change in a Dragons side that has only been adjusted in three places, a sign that Tiatia is not looking for a major reset after the previous win. Instead, he has opted for continuity with a targeted change in the centres.
That gives Dragons a fresh look in midfield while keeping the broader framework intact. In derby rugby, that balance can be important: too many changes and a team can lose rhythm, too little and it can become predictable.
Now the question is whether Dragons can make the most of home advantage and another strong crowd at Rodney Parade. After a win over Scarlets, the standard has already been set. Against Ospreys, the challenge is to show it was not a one-off.
