Tanner Rainey has elected free agency after finishing the season with Triple-A Toledo, bringing an end to his two-season run in the Detroit Tigers organization. It is a clean break for a veteran reliever who spent time at both the major league and Triple-A levels in 2026.
The Tigers finished the 2026 season with a 76-86 record and placed fourth in the American League Central after entering the year with high hopes and missing the playoffs. Rainey’s departure now adds another layer to an offseason in which the club will be assessing both its depth and its bullpen options.
Rainey’s 2026 season with the Tigers
Rainey appeared in six major league games for Detroit in 2026, going 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA and six strikeouts. After Detroit designated him for assignment in late August 2026, he cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo.
At Toledo, he worked in 13 games and posted a 0-1 record with an 11.17 ERA and 11 strikeouts. That was followed by his decision, after the season, to test the market as a free agent.
A veteran reliever on the move
Rainey now heads back into free agency with 217 career MLB games behind him across nine seasons. His overall major league record stands at 5-11 with a 5.46 ERA and 253 strikeouts, a résumé that reflects both experience and the kind of volatility that often comes with relief pitching.
For the Tigers, the move is another reminder that roster decisions made in late August and at the end of the season can quickly shape the next phase of an organization. For Rainey, it is the chance to look for a new role after finishing the year in Detroit’s system.
