Spain’s wholesale electricity price averaged 201.99 euros/MWh on 6 October, pushing electricity above 200 euros per megawatt hour for the first time since 2022. The move adds pressure to household bills, including those on the regulated PVPC tariff, which covers about eight million households.

David Alonso Reviriego, CEO and founder of Isla Solar, pointed to one detached house in Madrid to show how rooftop solar can change monthly costs. In his example, the monthly bill fell from 116.43 euros to 34.93 euros, with a project cost of 6,310 euros and an estimated payback of 6.5 years.

Madrid and PVPC households

On Tuesday 6 October, the pool price climbed after higher demand and a rise in gas prices, adding to a run-up that had already taken the market to a monthly average of 143.26 euros/MWh in September. That September figure was 21.1% above August and 134.7% above September of 2025, showing how fast the reference cost has moved before it reached the latest spike.

The wholesale price is not the same as the final bill, but it feeds directly into household costs. The article says households can check whether they are on PVPC or the free market, adjust contracted power to real consumption, and shift appliance use to hours with lower demand.

Reviriego’s example comes from a Madrid detached house with nine panels of 475 W each, or 4.275 kWp, producing 6,985.5 kWh a year. The article says a home of that type can use 3,000 to 4,500 kWh a year on average, while a detached house of 100 to 150 square meters can use 4,500 to 6,500 kWh a year.

The installation details matter for homes that can actually use the space. The article says south-facing panels produce the most energy in general, a deviation of up to 30 degrees east or west cuts annual production by 2% to 5%, and in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, where Madrid is located, the recommended tilt is between 30 and 35 degrees.

Spain electricity costs

The harder part for many households is the upfront cost. Reviriego’s Madrid example shows that even with a monthly bill cut of more than 80 euros, the system required 6,310 euros at the start, so the shorter bill does not arrive without a significant initial outlay. For detached-house owners, the practical choice now is between trimming use and, where the roof allows it, moving part of that demand to self-generation.

How much the 6 October spike changes a typical bill in euros is not stated, but the direction is clear: the higher pool price will feed into household costs unless consumption falls or more of it is offset at home.
