Lautaro Martinez may be left out for Inter Vs Parma after three Argentina matches — Cristian Chivu is already managing the load

This is not the sort of decision that gets made casually. If Cristian Chivu really does leave Lautaro Martinez out of the starting line-up for Inter Vs Parma, it will be a message as much as a selection call: Inter are entering the kind of schedule that punishes any hint of overuse, and the captain has just come back from three Argentina matches and a long trip.

Lautaro Martinez played 75 minutes against Bolivia, 45 minutes against Burkina Faso and 79 minutes against Benin during the international break, and he returned having moved into third place in Argentina's all-time scoring charts with 42 goals. That is the good news. The less glamorous reality is that tomorrow's 18:00 meeting with Parma at San Siro comes at the start of a stretch where Inter are scheduled to play every three days until 8 November. If Chivu is thinking about the bigger picture, he has every reason to be cautious now rather than pay for it later.

Inter's next month leaves no room for sentiment

This is where squad management stops being a nice theory and becomes an ugly necessity. Inter host Bruges on Tuesday 13 October at 21:00, then go to Bologna on Saturday 17 October at 18:00, then welcome Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday 21 October at 21:00. Fiorentina arrive at San Siro on Sunday 25 October at 12:30 before Inter go to Venezia on Wednesday 28 October. Then comes the derby with AC Milan away on Saturday 31 October at 20:45, followed by Feyenoord away in Rotterdam on Tuesday 3 November at 21:00 and Como on 8 November at 18:00.

That is a brutal sequence, and it is exactly why a player of Lautaro Martinez's importance cannot be treated like a machine. He is too valuable for Inter to ignore, but he is also too important to burn out in October because the fixture list looks flattering on paper and unforgiving in practice. Chivu has to balance the immediate need to beat Parma with the longer-term need to keep his attack fresh for the battles that actually define the season.

Marcus Thuram is the obvious alternative

If Lautaro Martinez is rested, Marcus Thuram is the natural player to benefit. He has been training at Appiano after not being called up for France's Nations League fixtures, which puts him in a better position than most to step straight into the side. That does not automatically make the choice simple, but it does make it logical. Inter do not need another emotional debate about whether their captain can play every game. They need a manager willing to act before exhaustion starts making the decision for him.

And that is the uncomfortable truth here. Resting Lautaro Martinez against Parma would not be a sign of weakness. It would be a sign that Inter have understood the reality of their season. A home league match at San Siro matters, of course. But what matters more is whether the team still has enough left in the tank when the calendar starts throwing Bruges, Bologna, Shakhtar Donetsk, AC Milan and Feyenoord at them in quick succession.

Chivu is seriously considering a move that would have sounded much more controversial a week ago. Right now, it sounds practical. In this run, practicality may be the sharpest weapon Inter have.
