Nebraska appears to be getting a key piece back at exactly the right time. Jamal Rule is expected to return for the Indiana game after missing two straight games, and that matters because the Huskers’ rushing production has looked thinner without him.
During Matt Rhule’s weekly press conference, Rhule said Rule felt good enough to go against Maryland, but Nebraska chose to give him another week of rest. Rule was listed as a game-time decision against Maryland and then did not play, leaving Nebraska to struggle for rushing yards from anyone but Anthony Colandrea over its last two games without him.
Why the timing matters
The timing is important because Nebraska enters the Indiana game at 5-0, and this is being framed as one of the biggest games in the program’s last two decades. The opponent only raises the stakes: the No. 7 Hoosiers are the defending national champion, and Nebraska has not beaten a Top 25 team in the Rhule era.
That is why Rule’s availability feels bigger than a normal injury update. Nebraska does not just need bodies; it needs reliable production and a run game that can stay functional when the pressure rises. If Rule is back, the Huskers should have a better chance of balancing the offense instead of leaning too hard on one area.
The broader question is not simply whether Jamal Rule plays, but whether Nebraska can turn his return into something more meaningful against a top-tier opponent. In a game with this much weight, that kind of reinforcement may be the difference between being competitive and looking like a team still searching for its ceiling.
