There should be no hiding place here. Napoli are back from the international break, the schedule is about to turn nasty, and Massimiliano Allegri has made the situation brutally clear: take the three points against Frosinone and start building a proper run of victories. That is not a luxury in an early-season title race. It is the minimum requirement.
The numbers already tell you why this matters. Napoli sit ninth after five games, with two defeats and only five points on the board. That is not a platform for comfort, and it is certainly not the sort of return that makes anyone look down on the rest of the calendar and assume things will sort themselves out. Before the November international break, Napoli face nine games in just under a month. One slip can quickly become a pattern.
Frosinone are not coming in to play the role of obedient backdrop, either. Promoted from Serie B, they have already taken 10 points and arrive with enough confidence to make this awkward if Napoli are even slightly off. The recent history is another warning sign. The last meeting ended 2-2 at the Maradona on 14 April 2024, which is hardly the kind of result that encourages complacency. If Napoli treat this as a routine restart, they may get a very sharp reminder that Serie A does not care about reputations.
Allegri has made the message plain
Allegri’s tone was exactly what Napoli needed from him. No drama, no panic, but also no pretending that ninth place after five games is acceptable. He said there should be no anxiety, but the focus must be on the goal of taking the three points. He also went further, stressing that Napoli need to put together a good string of victories to stay in touch, while keeping one eye on the Champions League and the need to move step by step.
That is the right balance, because Napoli cannot afford to get lost in the noise of the fixture list. They need to win now, not admire the theory of improvement later. The league table will not wait for momentum to arrive politely.
Selection news offers a little relief
There is at least some movement in the squad. Allegri said Scott McTominay will be called up and should be available for 20 to 30 minutes. He also said Mathias Olivera should be okay within a week, while Frank Anguissa is recovering. In addition, Luca Marianucci is coming back in, Benoit Badiashile has come on a lot, and Rafa Marin is available. That is not a perfect picture, but it is a more reassuring one than the alternative.
So the task is simple enough to state and difficult enough to matter: Napoli have to beat Frosinone, start collecting results, and stop behaving like a side waiting for its season to begin. In a month this congested, the teams that drift are the teams that regret it. Napoli cannot afford to be one of them.
