Kent State gets a quick chance to respond this Saturday when it takes on Western Michigan in a Kent State vs WMU matchup that will help show whether the Golden Flashes can compete with one of the MAC’s best teams. Coming off a 13-10 loss to Ohio on homecoming, Kent State enters conference play looking for a more complete performance against the defending league champion.

The trip to Western Michigan is more than just another game on the schedule. It is an early measuring-stick opportunity for a team that wants to prove it belongs against conference favorites. Kent State’s defense has been a bright spot through the first two conference games, and that side of the ball will again be asked to keep the Golden Flashes in position to compete.

What Kent State showed against Ohio

Last week’s loss to Ohio was tight, but it also showed both the promise and the frustration in Kent State’s recent play. Coach Carney said the team took advantage of the light boxes Ohio used, but it was not consistent enough late in the game to finish the job. Kent State also had two turnovers, a reminder that a few mistakes can change the result in a close conference game.

Special teams were part of the story, too. Sean Leonard had been named MAC specialist of the week one week earlier after his performance against Ball State, but against Ohio he missed the game-tying kick late in regulation and had an earlier fourth-quarter kick blocked. Carney said Leonard knows who he is, and noted that football brings those highs and lows from one week to the next.

Kent State’s offense and defense both showed stretches of competitiveness against Ohio, but the challenge now is turning those stretches into a full game. Carney’s message after the loss was simple: the team has to be more consistent if it wants to turn close games into wins.

Western Michigan brings a bigger challenge

Western Michigan presents a different kind of test. Carney described the Broncos as physical, well recruited and extremely disciplined in the way they attack. He also said they play true 11-on-11 football, which is a compliment and a warning at the same time. Against a team like that, Kent State will need clean execution across all three phases.

Western Michigan also has multiple players who can stress a defense. Broc Lowry ran for a touchdown in the Broncos’ win over Buffalo, and Carney said their quarterback does an outstanding job as both a passer and a runner. That dual threat will be one of the central issues for Kent State’s defense, which has been one of the team’s steadier units so far.

For Kent State, the formula is clear: limit mistakes, stay competitive on defense and build on the signs it showed against Ohio. If the Golden Flashes can put together a complete effort, this matchup could say a lot about where they stand in the MAC. If not, Western Michigan is the kind of disciplined opponent that can expose the gap quickly.
