Colten Ellis expected to start as Sabres prep for Mammoth — Mammoth Vs Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres do not need a complete overhaul to change the feel of a game. They need a better start, a little more finish, and maybe a cleaner lineup read when the puck drops against the Utah Mammoth. That is the backdrop for Saturday’s Mammoth Vs Sabres meeting at KeyBank Center, where Colten Ellis is expected to start after a strong season debut and where Jiri Kulich and Konsta Helenius could both be scratched.

Ellis already gave Buffalo a useful reminder on Tuesday, stopping 18 of 20 shots in a win over Minnesota. That came after the Sabres opened the homestand with a 4-0 loss to Dallas, a result that again underlined the same issue Lindy Ruff has been trying to address: the Sabres have trailed after the first period in each of their first four games. At this stage of the schedule, that is less a trend than a warning sign.

What Ruff wants to change

Ruff did not hide the message after Thursday’s game. He said the starts have to be better, and he wants the Sabres to begin putting the puck in the back of the net earlier. He also made the lineup competition sound real, saying that if a player wants to stay in the lineup, he has to play hard and bring something to the table every night. That is where Kulich and Helenius come in, with both forwards potentially sitting against the Mammoth.

There is a clear logic to that approach. Buffalo is in the middle of a five-game homestand, now heading into the fifth game of the stretch, and the margin for drifting through early periods is shrinking. The Sabres are also wearing black and red for the first time this season, which gives the night a little extra edge, but the bigger issue is still performance. The record can look different on paper than it does in the first 20 minutes, and Buffalo has spent too much time chasing games instead of shaping them.

That is why Ellis matters even beyond one start. Goaltending has already become part of the conversation, but so has structure. Buffalo has been the fifth team in the NHL to reach the kind of early-season sample that begins to reveal habits, and the Sabres’ habit so far has been to start slowly. When that happens, even a solid effort can feel fragile.

Utah brings a different kind of problem. The Mammoth entered this game after a strong scoring start to the season, even after a 6-1 loss in Boston on Thursday. They have shown enough punch to make mistakes expensive, which means Buffalo cannot afford another night spent reacting instead of dictating.

For the Sabres, the message is simple enough. The goaltending change may matter, the possible scratches may matter, but none of it will matter nearly as much as whether Buffalo finally plays from ahead. In a homestand that has already included both a 4-0 shutout loss and a win from Ellis, this game feels less like a routine date on the schedule and more like another test of whether the Sabres are ready to stop making the same opening-night mistake over and over again.
