About 30 firefighters tackled a blaze at Atherton Bikes in Machynlleth on Sunday morning, after crews were called to the factory at Treowain business park at 08:00 BST. Grey smoke drifted over the town as emergency crews worked at the site.

Machynlleth factory fire

The factory fire drew two crews from the local fire station, along with two appliances from Aberystwyth and another from Llanidloes. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service sent an aerial ladder platform and a water bowser from Oswestry.

Gee Atherton and Rachel Atherton said they were devastated for their staff and customers. Rachel Atherton said, "The most important thing is no-one was injured and everyone is safe."

She also said, "We'll update customers, all of you guys waiting for bikes in the next few days," and thanked the fire service, calling its response "amazing". Residents in Machynlleth were told to keep doors and windows closed, and Dyfed Powys Police advised people to avoid the area.

Treowain business park response

The fire leaves Atherton Bikes facing an immediate interruption at its Treowain business park site, with customers waiting for bikes now set to hear more from the company in the next few days. The cause of the blaze was not given in the information made public on Sunday.
