Amy Dowden turned Strictly Results into a social-media rebuttal after Brendan Cole said she was not up to the challenge. The response landed after Amy Dowden and Chris Appleton were eliminated first from Strictly Come Dancing, shifting the story from exit to public pushback.
Mariah Carey line
Dowden mimed the opening line from Mariah Carey’s 2009 track Obsessed and wrote, “Why are you so obsessed with me?” She captioned the post, “If you know you know.”
That is the sharpest way she could answer criticism without extending the argument. It also kept the exchange on her terms, with the message framed as a direct reply rather than a wider statement about her place in Strictly Come Dancing.
Brendan Cole’s claim
Cole told Sky Vegas, “Amy has not been up to the challenge, in my opinion.” He added, “I don’t think Amy’s been doing a very good job for the last few years and she’s been out first for the last few years.” He then said, “One can do the maths on that.”
The criticism landed harder because Dowden had returned to Strictly Come Dancing in 2024 after missing the 2023 series while she was treated for grade three breast cancer. She was diagnosed in May 2023, had chemotherapy and a mastectomy, and underwent a second preventative mastectomy in November last year.
Dowden’s return
Dowden’s recent run on the show has been shaped by recovery as much as competition. She collapsed backstage and suffered an injury to her foot in the year before that, then was eliminated first in 2025 after being paired with Thomas Skinner.
Brendan Cole’s comments, and Dowden’s reply, now sit together as a public split over how to judge her run on the show: by results alone, or by the fact that she came back at all after a brutal medical stretch. Dowden’s closing request for kindness is the stronger note here, and it is the one that should stand unless Cole chooses to make the argument longer.
