Mike Love returned to the stage Saturday night at Cincinnati’s PNC Pavilion, and he did it seated in a chair. The Beach Boys played their first public concert in three months, a restart that followed months of cancellations and a quieter stretch for a group that had already been pushed off the road.
John Stamos told the crowd before the music began that Love was there, saying, “[Mike] is here tonight,” and adding, “He’s been going through some health issues. He’s had to cancel some shows.” He then walked Love onstage and sat him in a chair, making the return visible from the first song.
Cincinnati and the chair
The Beach Boys opened with “Do It Again,” with Brian Eichenberger singing lead instead of Love. “Surfin’ Safari” went to Christian Love, while Love joined in on background vocals at times during the night. After the opening song, he told the audience, “thank you for showing up,” a brief line that carried more weight because the performance had already been delayed by health-related absences.
Love’s seated appearance was not a one-off adjustment; he remained in the chair for the duration of the night. That choice kept the show moving without pretending the band was back at full strength, and it gave the audience a public look at how the group is handling his limited movement now.
June to October
In June, Love wrote to fans that “Losing my sister, Maureen, on the first anniversary of cousin Brian’s death, combined with my ongoing recovery from what started out as bronchitis, followed by COVID, has taken both an emotional and physical toll on me,” and added, “I feel stronger every day physically, but I am heartbroken emotionally.” After June, The Beach Boys still played three nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles before pulling the remainder of their September shows.
In September, the band said it would take a short break to recharge before getting back on the road, but venues later told fans the shows were not happening due to circumstances beyond their control. The private show on October 3 at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach luxury hotel in Dana Point, California already showed Love performing in a chair, and the public return in Cincinnati made that arrangement part of the live setup rather than an exception.
Ryman Auditorium in Nashville
Three days before the October 9 date at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois, that show was canceled, and The Beach Boys also pulled an October 19 gig in Calgary. Several hours before Sunday evening’s curtain time, John Stamos wrote that he was boarding a plane to Nashville to play with The Beach Boys at the Ryman Auditorium, which points to the immediate reality for this run: the band is back onstage, but only with a version of Love’s role that fits his current condition.
That is the story the Cincinnati crowd got first. The public return happened, but it did not erase the health problems behind the cancellations, and it left the next performance to carry the same basic test — whether Love can keep showing up in front of fans while seated and still front the songs that made the group matter in the first place.
