Rufus Sewell returns as Hal when The Diplomat comes back on October 15, and the marriage at the center of the series is still the problem it was when it began. Kate Wyler and Hal keep their careers and private lives fused together, which has left them one argument away from divorce even as the stakes around them keep rising.

2023 is where the series began, with Kate Wyler preparing to become US ambassador to Afghanistan before President William Rayburn sent her to London as US ambassador to the UK after an attack on HMS Courageous killed 43 sailors. That opening set the show’s business model: political crisis on one side, a volatile marriage on the other, with Rufus Sewell as the man keeping Hal in the frame.

Grace Penn and Kate Wyler

Three seasons later, the show is returning with its boardroom-style reset already in place. Season four picks up after Grace is in the White House and Kate’s husband is vice president, which shifts the power balance without separating the two leads from the same political machinery.

Kate and Hal’s relationship still drives the series because the conflict is never only domestic. Hal is not a side note to the statecraft; he is part of the machinery around it, and Sewell has made that clear through a character who stays politically useful even when the marriage is fraying.

London to Paris

43 sailors died in the HMS Courageous attack that launched the series, and the fallout kept widening from there. British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge first blamed Iran, but evidence pointed to the unseen Russian mercenary Roman Lenkov, sending Kate and British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison to Paris and setting up Britain’s plan to assassinate Lenkov rather than capture him.

A bomb planted in Merritt Grove’s car later exploded in London, with Stuart and his aide Ronnie caught in the blast. That escalation is why season four cannot simply restart the clock; the show has already turned one diplomatic crisis into a chain reaction that keeps forcing Kate and Hal back into the same room.

October 15 return

October 15 gives the series its next hard deadline, and the cleanest read is that season four will work best if it keeps the pressure on the relationship rather than pretending the political reset solved anything. Kate and Hal are still bound together, still compromised by power, and still headed into another round where both the White House and the marriage look unstable.
