Mackayla Paige shot and killed near 14th and Harrison streets in Oakland shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, ending the life of the 29-year-old reality television star known to fans as Kash. Oakland police said officers found a Richmond woman with at least one gunshot wound after responding to the shooting.
Officers tried lifesaving measures before taking her to a hospital, where she died. Oakland police later arrested another woman from Richmond in connection with the shooting.
Azima King in Oakland
Paige’s cousin, Azima King, described the loss as hard to process when she spoke to ABC7 Eyewitness News on Monday. “Honestly I don't know how I feel. I'm floating. Shaking. I've been shaking since yesterday,” King said.
She also said, “She just wanted better for her life. And she wanted to be better. And she wanted to change.”
Now That's TV tribute
Now That's TV paid tribute to Paige on Instagram Sunday and said she appeared on Young & Reckless, Roommhates and Now That's Riot. The network wrote, “Though her time with us was far too short, her memory will live on.”
Her death drew attention because she was a recognizable face from TV, and a memorial was growing in downtown Oakland after the shooting.
Oakland police arrest
Oakland police have not released the arrested woman’s identity, charges or a possible motive. That leaves the basic legal status of the case incomplete even as an arrest has already been made.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the deadly encounter near 14th and Harrison streets. Paige’s death came just over a week after the Oct. 3 shooting of Ulysses Tykee Davis outside the Warfield Theatre.
For now, the most immediate next step is the police investigation itself: who the arrested woman is, what charges follow and what evidence points to the cause of the shooting.
