Zoe Saldaña pushed Lioness season 3 toward a harder ending, and Neal left Joe and their children in the finale. Joe came home from her kidnapping and rescue to a For Sale sign and an empty house.
Saldaña said she kept calling Taylor Sheridan while he wrote the season and argued that Neal would leave if violence and threats reached the family’s door. That creative fight shaped the ending Joe gets: not reunion, but separation.
Zoe Saldaña and Taylor Sheridan
Saldaña framed the choice as a practical one. “I just kept calling Taylor as he was writing this season and sharing with him, 'I don't know why he would stay... If violence and threats approach the door of our home because of what my partner does, I would have to put my children first and leave,'” she said.
She added, “Taylor and I would have these little micro-disagreements about it.” Sheridan held the opposite view, Saldaña said, because “He believes in their love and that their love can withhold and survive everything.”
Joe McNamara’s Empty House
At the end of The Unraveling, Joe returned home after her kidnapping and rescue and found that Neal and the children had left. Joe’s family life was already strained before Lioness season 3, with her abduction by then-unknown men and her refusal to accept a desk job adding pressure to the marriage.
Dave Annable’s Neal leaving changes the show’s domestic center, which has been built around Joe and Neal’s marriage as much as the missions around it. Saldaña said she was grateful Sheridan gave Neal “the f***ing strength to leave her in order for him to make a point.”
Season 4 Still Open
As of the article, Paramount+ had not announced a Season 4, so the finale lands as a live question rather than a clean ending. Saldaña said, “I'm selfish, and if we are able to come back and do a Season 4, I wouldn't want their story to just have ended like that,” and added, “Because these are two people who really found each other.”
She also said, “I feel that Joe and Neal are like doves, they mate for life,” which is the right read for the unresolved part of the story. If Lioness returns, the show will have to decide whether that separation is the new baseline or just the latest break in Joe and Neal’s cycle.
