Stornoway's all-weather lifeboat was launched at 21:42 on Tuesday, and Lochinver RNLI's all-weather lifeboat joined a short time later. A plane, two helicopters, six coastguard rescue teams, two RNLI lifeboats, a local boat and Police Scotland were involved in the search off Port of Ness in north Lewis.

Police Scotland said the body of one of the men had been recovered, but formal identification had not yet taken place. The force said the next of kin of the men were aware and were being supported by officers.

The search continued into Wednesday morning with assistance from HM Coastguard and RNLI. Police said the wider operation remained active as crews kept looking off the north Lewis coast.

Weather over the Western Isles

The search took place as a weather system containing the remnants of Hurricane Isaias was forecast to bring gales, heavy rain and a surge of warm air to parts of the UK. A Met Office yellow warning covered parts of the Highlands and Western Isles, with gusts reaching 70mph in places.

The recovery of one body leaves two men still missing from the three-man crew, and the search remained focused on finding them after nightfall and into Wednesday morning. For families waiting for news, the immediate reality was that one member of the crew had been found, but the case had not reached identification.
