Angomcha Bimol Akoijam gets Delhi Police notice after JNU dismissal — Harassment

Delhi Police has served a notice to Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, asking him to join an investigation after JNU dismissed him over sexual harassment allegations. The notice comes after the university removed him with immediate effect on October 9, moving the case from an internal inquiry into a police investigation.

At least 11 female students filed complaints in May this year. They alleged that he invited students to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also said he made obscene and inappropriate remarks in class.

JNU dismissal on October 9

JNU dismissed Akoijam with immediate effect on October 9 after its inquiry into the allegations. The action ended his position at the university and created the basis for the police notice that followed.

Before the dismissal, he was a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU's School of Social Sciences. That role placed him at the center of complaints made by students who said the conduct happened on campus and in class.

Delhi Police notice to Akoijam

Delhi Police asked him to join the investigation after the university action. The notice means the police are now handling the case directly and want him to appear in connection with the complaints.

Akoijam has denied the sexual harassment allegations. The dispute therefore sits between the complaints filed by at least 11 female students and his denial, with the university inquiry already completed and the police investigation now underway.

The case now turns on what Delhi Police examines from here: the student complaints, the alleged meetings at his residence, and the classroom remarks described in the complaints. A separate police interview gives the investigation its next procedural step.
