Sometimes a Champions League meeting is shaped as much by the words before kickoff as the football itself. That is the case here, with Ousmane Dembele putting Gianluigi Donnarumma at the top of the goalkeeping conversation ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s clash with Manchester City.
Dembele did not leave much room for doubt. He said his relationship with Donnarumma is strong, that they speak constantly, and that in his view the Italian is the number one goalkeeper in the world. He also described him as exceptional, a very good friend, and a goalkeeper capable of changing the course of any match.
The timing matters. Donnarumma joined Manchester City on 1 September 2025 after four years in Paris, and Wednesday evening’s Champions League league phase meeting will bring him against PSG for the first time since that move. With the relationship between Donnarumma and Paris ending in difficult circumstances, the reunion already carries more edge than a routine group-stage fixture.
Why the comments matter
Dembele’s praise does more than flatter a former teammate. It also underlines the scale of the test PSG believe they are facing. If Donnarumma really is the kind of goalkeeper who can alter a match on his own, then PSG’s attacking plan has to account not just for Manchester City’s structure, but for the possibility that one save changes the rhythm of the night.
That is why Dembele’s message about PSG’s approach was so measured. He called it a big game against a very good team with special players, admitted it will not be easy, and said PSG will prepare well in order to get the three points. That sounds like the right balance: respect the opponent, but do not hide from the objective.
The same was true when he turned to Desire Doue. Dembele called Doue one of the most talented players in the world, praised his ability to score and dribble, and said he has a huge career ahead of him even though he has already scored in a Champions League final. It was another reminder that PSG’s forward line is built not only around experienced quality, but also around emerging talent.
For PSG, the story is not just that Donnarumma is back on the other side. It is that a familiar face arrives as a direct rival, with a reputation strong enough for one of the club’s own leaders to call him the best in the world. In a match this even, that kind of detail can matter almost as much as the tactics.
Wednesday evening will tell the football story. Dembele has already made the emotional one clear.
