Jesse Lee Soffer is back behind the camera on Chicago P.D., and the timing lands right on the question of is Atwater leaving Chicago PD. The Season 14 episode "Don't Blink," which aired on Wednesday, October 14 at 10/9c, puts Kevin Atwater at a choice point while the series moves toward a farewell for the character.
Don't Blink on October 14
"Don't Blink" is Soffer's fourth directing credit on Chicago P.D., after "Deadlocked," "Inventory," and "Open Wounds." He spent a decade playing Detective Jay Halstead before stepping into directing, and this return keeps him inside the same creative orbit even as the show shifts focus to Atwater's future.
The episode aired as Season 14, Episode 2, which matters because it is early enough in the season to set a direction, not just react to one. Gwen Sigan said the writers wanted to give Kevin Atwater something that felt super natural to his character and a sendoff he deserves, something his character has earned.
Kevin Atwater's two answers
Sigan said Kevin Atwater reaches a decision where both outcomes are good ones. That is the twist in the farewell storyline: Chicago P.D. is bidding farewell to LaRoyce Hawkins' Kevin Atwater, but the hour does not frame the choice as a punishment or a loss. It frames it as a rare moment when the character can choose between two positive paths.
"[Atwater] gets a choice in this episode where, in a rarity for us, it's like both of the answers to this choice are wonderful answers. And he gets to a place where he realizes 'I can choose what I want.'" Sigan said. For a character built around giving to other people, that choice is the whole point; the episode gives him a decision that belongs to him.
Jesse Lee Soffer's fourth credit
"We wanted to give that character a sendoff that he deserves and something his character has earned and make it positive, in a way, for him," Sigan said. She also said, "Jesse directed it and killed it. So it was all kind of in the family, which was nice." That keeps the episode tied to the show's own history, with Soffer now functioning as both former lead and recurring director.
For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: the episode does not answer is Atwater leaving Chicago PD with a clean yes-or-no exit. It shows the character at a fork in the road, and the story's real payoff is the decision itself, not a sudden disappearance.
