Four defeats in five have Hoffenheim on the ropes before Besiktas visit — Hoffenheim Vs Beşiktaş

This is not the kind of backdrop Hoffenheim wanted for a Europa League night at the SNP Arena. Four defeats in five league matches, a 2-0 loss to OFI Crete in Europe, and a weekend collapse from 2-1 up to a 3-2 defeat against Hamburger SV is a brutal way to greet matchday two. Christian Ilzer does not need reminding that Thursday is about more than points now; it is about stopping a season from sliding before it has properly settled.

That is what makes Hoffenheim Vs Beşiktaş such a loaded meeting. Hoffenheim are trying to recover from an unacceptable start, yet their visitors arrive with a far happier mood. Beşiktaş opened their Europa League campaign with a 4-1 win over Marseille and have five wins from six games overall, so the contrast is stark. One side looks rattled and fragile. The other looks dangerous, even if not flawless.

Hoffenheim need a response, not another excuse

Hoffenheim have at least shown they can still produce a moment of resistance, as their 2-1 win over Stuttgart on September 12 proved. But that feels more like an isolated bright spot than the start of a convincing recovery. The bigger picture is ugly: too many defeats, too little control, and far too many matches in which the result has gone away from them once the pressure rises.

The home setting matters here. SNP Arena should be a place where Hoffenheim impose themselves, not a venue where they spend long spells trying to repair self-inflicted damage. Losing to Hamburger SV after leading 2-1 is exactly the sort of result that eats away at confidence. It suggests a team that can compete for parts of a match but cannot yet trust itself to finish the job.

Besiktas arrive sharper, but not spotless

Beşiktaş are not walking into this with everything perfect. Their away record is a concern, and their defensive record is hardly watertight. They have kept only one clean sheet across all competitions since mid-August, which is hardly the profile of a team that can stroll through difficult European trips without consequence. And on Sunday, the win over Kocaelispor came with a downside, as Vaclav Cerny suffered an injury.

Even so, the basic form line still belongs to Beşiktaş. Five wins from six games is a serious return, and that 4-1 victory over Marseille in their Europa League opener sent a clear message. They have momentum, while Hoffenheim are still trying to find their footing. In this fixture, that is usually the side of the argument that matters most.

So Thursday is simple enough in theory, even if football rarely plays along. Hoffenheim need urgency, structure and some resilience at home. Beşiktaş need to turn their superior form into a result away from home, despite the injury blow and the defensive questions. If Hoffenheim start slowly again, this could become another painfully familiar evening. If they do not, they will at least give Christian Ilzer something concrete to build on. Right now, that is the bare minimum.
