The Seattle Seahawks moved Velus Jones Jr. to the 53-man roster ahead of their Week 6 road game against the Denver Broncos, another sign that Seattle is still adjusting its depth chart after the first month of the season.
The move came a day after Seattle released Irv Charles to make room for Jones. Charles had been activated to the active roster on Tuesday, but the Seahawks quickly reshuffled again as they continued to manage special teams and secondary depth.
What Seattle was trying to address
Seattle had struggled with kickoff coverage through the first five games, and that issue appears to have played into the timing of the roster move. Jones gives the Seahawks another active option as they head into a road matchup in Week 6.
Charles, who was acquired from the New York Jets in May, had not appeared in a game since joining Seattle in the offseason. He later was designated to return to practice on October 7, which kept him in the mix even after being released from the 53-man roster.
The Seahawks also added Jimmy Ciarlo on September 30, part of a series of moves that shows how much the team is still sorting through its roster. With the Broncos next on the schedule, Seattle’s focus remains on coverage units and adding reliable depth where it can.
For Jones, the roster spot offers another chance to stick in Seattle and contribute in a role that could matter quickly. For the Seahawks, it is a practical move before a road trip that should tell them more about where the roster stands.
