Miami University Issues All-Clear After McGuffey Hall Alert — Miami, Ohio Active Shooter

Miami University issued an all-clear around 2:40 p.m. Thursday after a Miami, Ohio active shooter scare near McGuffey Hall prompted an emergency alert. The university said there was no evidence of gunfire after officers searched the building and surrounding area.

The alert followed reports that first reached the Butler County Sheriff’s Office around 2 p.m. The Miami University Police Department also received reports of shots fired from a student in a classroom, and a RedHawk alert went out telling students, faculty and staff to avoid the area.

McGuffey Hall Response

Officers searched McGuffey Hall and the area around it before issuing the all-clear. The RedHawk Alert said there was no active threat on campus and told people they were safe to resume daily activities.

The campus response turned on a fast check of a report that had not yet matched what witnesses later described. OPD officers spoke to multiple witnesses who said the noise sounded more consistent with firework.

No injured parties were found in the area. That left the alert as a precautionary campus safety response rather than a confirmed shooting, and it ended once officers found no active threat.

For students, faculty and staff near McGuffey Hall, the practical change came quickly: avoid the area during the alert, then resume daily activities after the all-clear. The unresolved piece is what caused the noise that witnesses thought was more consistent with firework.
