Ospreys picked up their first United Rugby Championship win of the season with a 38-31 victory over Dragons in a 10-try Welsh derby at Rodney Parade.

The result mattered for more than the league table. It ended Dragons' unbeaten start after they had opened the campaign with a draw against Benetton and a win over Scarlets, and it gave Ospreys a timely lift after a difficult start that included defeats against Sharks and Lions in South Africa.

Parry leads the way for Ospreys

Sam Parry was the key figure for the visitors, with the hooker scoring two tries as Ospreys kept pace in a match that stayed tight for long periods. The game went back and forth, with both teams crossing the line and neither side able to pull clear until Ospreys did enough to finish it off.

The scoring reflected that balance, with the game producing 10 tries in total and Dragons contributing heavily to the contest despite coming out on the wrong side of the result. The hosts had enough attacking moments to stay in touch, but Ospreys were more efficient at the decisive moments.

More derby context in a season of change

This was also a fixture played against a wider backdrop. Twelve months ago, Ospreys arrived in Newport a day after the WRU announced it had cut the number of regions from four to three, and supporters from both teams marched together through the city before a 19-19 draw.

That context still hangs over the rivalry. The WRU has already set out how it reached its geographical decision, with Dragons saved in the east and Cardiff in the capital, while Ospreys and Scarlets were left to compete for the west Wales licence. Matches between these sides now carry extra weight because of what they represent beyond the scoreboard.

Injuries add to the concern

The match also came with injury setbacks for both teams. Three injured props were among the issues to come out of the derby, adding another complication to a game that was already physically demanding and packed with momentum swings.

The teams will not have long to dwell on it. Later in October, Ospreys and Dragons will meet again in another Welsh derby in Swansea, where both sides will have a quick chance to reset and respond.
