Tom Cruise Digger Movie Financial Loss Grows to $245 Million

Tom Cruise digger movie financial loss has been put at $245 million after Digger pulled in just $37.7 million so far and fell 60% in its second US weekend. For Warner Bros, the math points to a film that needs far more ticket sales than it is now tracking to reach break-even.

London premiere, two-hour delay

Digger’s world premiere in London four weeks ago began two hours late after Cruise’s red carpet selfies and autographs, and the event drew William, Kate, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons and Michael Stuhlbarg. The glamour around that night now reads differently: the source says the premiere became the high point of Digger’s theatrical run.

$8 million in the US and $12 million across 74 territories were the opening numbers that set the tone a week after the premiere. The film opened worldwide with appalling box office, then faded quickly enough that estimates now put its final haul at $50 million, a level far below the line needed to recoup costs.

Warner Bros and the break-even gap

$125 million was the original budget, but production reportedly rose to about $175 million during a six-month shoot, and $100 million went to marketing. With cinemas retaining around half of ticket revenue, the film would appear to need about $350 million in sales to break even, while Warner Bros puts the figure closer to $300 million.

$245 million in projected losses would place Digger among the most costly flops of all time, alongside the kind of benchmark failures the source compares it with. Cruise’s first-dollar deal means early takings are split before the studio sees the bulk of them, so the weak opening and steep second-weekend drop leave little room for a late recovery.

$50 million haul, no rescue

$50 million is the haul Digger is expected to finish on, and that leaves a wide gap between revenue and the studio’s recoupment threshold. Whether the film can add any meaningful money beyond that number is the remaining question hanging over Tom Cruise and Warner Bros.
