Herbie Farnworth has been picked at centre for England's Rugby League World Cup opener against Tonga, keeping the 26-year-old in the role where he has been described as excelling for the Dolphins in the NRL.

Brian McDermott named his full England side earlier this week, and the selection confirmed that Farnworth will not be asked to switch to full-back for Saturday morning's match in Perth.

That decision follows McDermott's stance last week, when he dismissed the suggestion that Farnworth could move to full-back. The message was clear: England wanted him where he is most comfortable and where he can have the biggest attacking influence.

Jonny Lomax explained the thinking behind that view, saying Farnworth produces every week at centre and would be something of an unknown at full-back. Lomax also pointed out that the centre role allows Farnworth to drift out of the line looking for the ball, take carries through the middle and save energy for the parts of the game where England want him to be most dangerous.

At full-back, Lomax said, there is simply more ground to cover and a heavier running load, while at centre Farnworth has a different type of workload that lets him be more free in attack. For England, that balance matters in a World Cup opener where structure and energy both have to be managed carefully.

The team sheet also confirmed Harry Smith in the halves, another notable part of England's selection. Lomax gave Smith strong backing too, saying he does not always get the credit he deserves because the attention at Wigan Warriors often goes to Bevan French and Jai Field. Even so, Lomax said Smith helps that team flow with his organisation, kicking game and communication.

For England, that combination matters against Tonga. Lomax said Smith's ability to pin opponents in a corner and turn big bodies around can be crucial in swinging momentum, particularly in a physical game. With Farnworth at centre and Smith in the halves, England have opted for a backline setup that leans into familiarity, control and energy in the right areas.
