Eight changes for Sale Vs Glasgow Warriors as Franco Smith brings back his big guns for Champions Cup opener

Franco Smith has made his point loud and clear: Glasgow Warriors are not going into their Investec Champions Cup opener to admire the occasion. They are going into Corpacq Stadium to take on a strong, physical Sale Sharks side with a team that looks far more like a proper European statement than a cautious away-day shuffle.

Eight changes tell you plenty. This is a reset, yes, but it is also a declaration of intent. Glasgow won last weekend against Connacht, yet Smith has still ripped up enough of that side to bring in returning internationals and, crucially, hand Ruwald van der Merwe his first appearance for the club. That is not selection for the sake of it. That is a coach choosing his timing with some care.

Back with purpose

Smith’s biggest move is the return of three Scotland internationals, with Kyle Steyn, Zander Fagerson and Alex Craig all brought back into the lineup. Euan Ferrie is also recalled, giving Glasgow a much stronger look for a second successive European opener away from home in Greater Manchester. That matters. If you are trying to set the tone in the opening round of a campaign, you do not want to arrive undercooked, underpowered or over-cautious.

There is a simple football truth here: away from home in Europe, especially against a Sale side that Smith himself expects to be strong and physical in front of their own supporters, you need enough know-how in the XV to absorb pressure and enough quality to hurt them when the chances come. Glasgow have tried to build that balance into this selection.

The return of Fagerson is especially notable given that his last outing came in Scotland’s meeting with South Africa in the Nations Championship earlier this summer. That is a serious layoff from this level, and it underlines why Smith was careful to stress the work done with the medical and S&C teams. This is not a throw-it-together selection. It is a managed one.

Van der Merwe gets his chance

Then there is Ruwald van der Merwe, the summer signing who arrived before the 2026/27 season and has now earned his first Glasgow Warriors appearance. That is the kind of detail that matters because it gives the match an extra layer beyond the usual opening-night noise. When a new arrival is trusted straight away in a European fixture, it says the staff believe he is ready now, not at some vague point in the future.

Smith’s own wording was telling. He said Glasgow look forward to getting their Investec Champions Cup campaign underway and described Sale as a strong, physical test. He also made a point of highlighting van der Merwe’s work since arriving, and the diligence of Kyle, Alex, Zander and Euan in their return to fitness. In other words, this is selection built on earned opportunity, not sentiment.

Glasgow’s social media nod on 15 October to some of their best moments against Sale Sharks over the years adds the usual pre-match theatre, but the real story is the team sheet. The Warriors are opening their European campaign away from home for the second consecutive season, and they have chosen experience, fitness and fresh blood all at once. That is a sensible shape for a match that could easily turn into a scrap.

The verdict? Eight changes sounds dramatic, but it is the right kind of dramatic. Glasgow have used the opening of the 2026/27 season to remind everyone that Europe demands more than sentimentality and momentum from last weekend. It demands a proper side, and Smith has named one.
