This is exactly the kind of late-October game that stops being a routine league fixture the moment you look at the table. Real Betis do not just have Barcelona coming to El Estadio La Cartuja in Seville on Saturday, Oct. 17 — they have a chance to drag themselves within two points of the league leaders. In a season where Barcelona have looked untouchable so far, that is not a detail. That is the entire point.
Barcelona arrive with a perfect start to the campaign still intact, fresh from a 3-0 win over Getafe last weekend and a 4-1 victory over Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League in midweek. That is a serious run, the sort that usually forces the rest of the division into damage limitation. But Betis are not arriving like passengers. Manuel Pellegrini’s side come in third after beating Osasuna 5-2 and Porto 3-2, and there is a very real edge to that form. They are not here to admire Barcelona. They are here to test them.
That is what makes this match worth watching beyond the obvious name value. Barcelona’s perfect start says one thing. Betis’ recent surge says another. One team is trying to prove that its early dominance is sustainable. The other is trying to prove that the gap at the top is not nearly as secure as it looks. If Betis win, the conversation changes immediately.

This is a match with proper league consequences and a properly sharp edge to it. Barcelona want to keep their perfect start rolling. Betis want to turn a productive week into something far more dangerous. If Pellegrini’s side can do that, they will not just be enjoying a strong run — they will have forced themselves into the title conversation, whether anyone at the top likes it or not.
