Icons Week loses one pairing

Strictly Come Dancing reached week four with its second themed live show, and the lineup narrowed before the first routine began. Delta’s withdrawal changed the balance of the night immediately: one fewer couple on the floor, one less score to factor into the leaderboard, and one less route to the top spot for everyone else.

That is the practical effect for the field. Melanie Walters had already become the second celebrity to leave last week, so the competition entered Icons Week with 13 couples still in play. Delta’s exit from the floor reduced the live show to 12 performances, which means the rest of the cast had a slightly cleaner run at the judges’ attention and the public vote.

Dani Dyer and Cach Mercer

Dani Dyer was due to perform a Rumba to Mariah Carey’s Hero, while Cach Mercer was scheduled for a Foxtrot to Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York. Lawrence and Jowita were set for a Salsa to La Copa de la Vida by Ricky Martin, and Lawrence’s VT showed him meeting up with Emmerdale pal Lewis Cope.

Those pairings mattered because Icons Week was built around tribute routines, with the professionals also paying tribute to Madonna in an extra special routine. When one contestant drops out, the week’s structure shifts from a full slate of competitive dances to a shortened card, and that makes every remaining score carry a little more weight.

Lawrence and Jowita scores

Lawrence and Jowita still delivered the night’s clearest judging action, with Anton saying, "Heaven’s above. That was spectacular. I sense it already that one or two this side of me are going to talk about technique. But I think your performance was outstanding. Your lifts are amazing. Please don’t dance less than that performance ever again."

Craig added, "I thought you were picking your feet up way too much. It didn’t help you with any figure-eight hip action, it was very square. But that is the strongest dance I’ve seen you do." Motsi said, "Listen, this is the Lawrence we need. You were so enthusiastic. You are improving, great leading skills. But I think if you find a little more time to practice, you would be even better." Shirley said, "I loved the partnering skills, the energy. They were lifts you would do as a top-class professional. Your fluidity is getting better."

For Delta, the issue is less about one missed routine than about the reset she gets under the show’s rules. The bye keeps her inside the competition without forcing a farewell at Icons Week, but it also leaves the week’s leaderboard and public voting shaped by 12 couples rather than the 13 still standing before the injury hit.
