The Scarlets have named their side to face Newcastle Red Bulls in Saturday’s EPCR Challenge Cup opener at Parc y Scarlets, with seven changes made to the team that beat Benetton last weekend.
The match kicks off at 20:00 and marks the start of the Scarlets’ campaign in a competitive pool. After a dramatic late victory over Benetton, the home side now turn their attention to a Newcastle team Nigel Davies has described as dangerous and talented, with form in the PREM already showing what they can do.
Momentum and selection
Nigel Davies said last weekend’s result was massive for Scarlets and stressed the importance of carrying that momentum into this fixture. He also pointed to the depth within the squad, saying the club has been able to bring in quality as it looks to start the competition strongly.
That message is reflected in the selection. With the pool stage beginning, the Scarlets have made a number of changes while still keeping continuity in key areas. Two of the seven changes stand out in particular: Taine Plumtree returns after recovering from a shoulder issue following surgery in the summer, while Macs Page is set for a significant milestone.
Macs Page set for 50th appearance
Page, who made his Scarlets debut against Saracens in 2023, is due to make his 50th Scarlets appearance at just 21 years of age. It is also his first competitive start for the club. For a young player, that is a notable step, and it comes in a fixture that should offer a good early test of the squad’s depth.
Davies was clear about the challenge ahead. He said it is a tough group and that starting well in the competition matters. He also highlighted the role of the supporters, noting that the crowd helped the Scarlets get over the line against Benetton and will be important again at Parc y Scarlets.
With home backing expected once more, the Scarlets will look to turn last week’s momentum into another strong result when Newcastle Red Bulls arrive in Llanelli on Saturday.
