No. 15 Kentucky takes a four-game winning streak to Norman on Saturday night, where it will face Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. ET in the first meeting between the schools since Oklahoma joined the Southeastern Conference.
The matchup comes with Kentucky at 5-1 and Oklahoma at 3-1, but both teams arrive with momentum. Kentucky has won two straight games by the same 35-34 score in overtime, first against South Carolina two weeks ago and then against LSU last weekend at Kroger Field. Oklahoma, meanwhile, is coming off its biggest win of the season after beating then-No. 1 Texas 27-24 in Dallas in the Red River Rivalry.
This is only the fourth time Kentucky and Oklahoma have met on the gridiron, and the history is spread across a wide timeline. Kentucky beat Oklahoma 13-7 in the 1951 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Oklahoma won 29-7 in Norman in 1980, and the Sooners took the last meeting in Lexington 29-8 in 1982.
What Kentucky has to clean up
Even with the winning streak, Kentucky coach Will Stein made clear there is still plenty to address. After the LSU win, he said the Wildcats have to keep pushing and growing, and that there were chances to put the game away and score 42 points. He also pointed to tackling as an area that needs immediate improvement.
That matters against Oklahoma, which will bring more speed and physicality than Kentucky has seen in recent weeks. The Wildcats have shown they can finish close games, and Stein’s willingness to go for do-or-die two-point conversions in both of those overtime wins speaks to how aggressive Kentucky has been in those moments. The challenge now is doing that without leaving as much room for error.
For Kentucky, this trip is about more than just extending the streak. It is a chance to show that the Wildcats can travel, handle the atmosphere in Norman and keep winning against an opponent that just added another Top10-level statement to its season. For Oklahoma, it is an early chance to validate that Texas win and protect home field in a game that carries both SEC and historical significance.
