Eva Lys Ends 2026 Season Early to Reset Her Body and Mind After Tough Year

Eva Lys has ended her 2026 season early, saying the decision is about protecting both her physical and mental health after a difficult year on and off the court. The 24-year-old German, who is now world No. 136, says the priority is to reset properly and make a change to the arthritis treatment she has lived with for over six years.

It is a significant call, but not an unexpected one given the way her year unfolded. Lys enjoyed a breakout 2025, when she reached the second week of the Australian Open and later upset Elena Rybakina in Beijing, only for her results to fall back this season. In 2026, she won just eight matches, and her own words made clear how heavy the campaign had become.

Why Lys decided to stop now

Writing to supporters, Lys explained the move plainly. “I’ve made the decision to end my 2026 season early to focus on my physical and mental health,” she said, adding that it had been “one of the toughest years of my life, both on and off the court.”

She also described the struggle in more detail, saying it had been “frustrating, exhausting and at times really hard to accept,” especially when “your body and mind just don’t cooperate.” That is the core of the story here. This is not a player stepping away because of form alone, but someone acknowledging that the strain has become too much to carry through the rest of the year.

Lys said her ongoing battle with arthritis had been “particularly difficult to manage this year,” and revealed that, after over six years, she and her team had decided to take “a big step” and change her treatment. She called it “a big adjustment” and accepted that it would take time, but added that she is hopeful it is “a step in the right direction.”

What she said about 2027

Lys was also clear that this is not a farewell. “For now, I’m taking the time I need to get healthy again,” she said. “Looking forward to 2027 and everything that comes with it. I’ll be back.”

That message matters because it frames this as a pause, not an exit. After publicly disclosing her spondyloarthritis following her diagnosis in 2020, Lys has spent years balancing the demands of the tour with a condition that can affect day-to-day preparation as much as match performance.

She has already spoken about how that balance can change in practical terms. At the French Open in 2025, she said her body was not doing what it was supposed to do. More recently, she said there had been days when she had to do “one or two practices less” because it was something she had to do, even if she knew that giving her body time helped her recover.

That is why this early ending to 2026 feels so important. Lys is not just shutting down a season; she is trying to protect the next stage of her career by making a difficult but necessary adjustment now. If the treatment change works, 2027 could look very different. For the moment, though, the message is simple: she needs time, and she intends to use it.
