What was meant to be a pregame tribute at the Alamodome turned into a medical emergency just before 7 p.m., when a member of the military fell while rappelling ahead of UTSA’s football game against Navy.
The demonstration was part of the Roadrunners’ Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans night, a familiar kind of pregame pageantry that was suddenly interrupted by concern on the field. After the fall, UTSA staff surrounded the service member and he received medical attention.
Witnesses described the fall as sudden
Adrian Corey, who was at the game, told KSAT that the incident happened quickly once the band started playing. “Once the band started playing, there was a guy that fell down,” Corey said, adding that he “started coming down fast.”
Siomara Corey also said there were no immediate updates after the incident except a request for prayers. “There was no updates after that other than asking for prayers, but it did not look good,” she said.
KSAT later reported that the service member had been transported to the hospital, and his condition was unknown. Three other officers were involved in the pregame demonstration.
The moment shifted attention away from the game itself and toward the people behind the ceremony. Military tributes are often designed to set a tone before kickoff; here, the tone changed in an instant, and the priority became the response on the field rather than the football.
For UTSA, the evening was supposed to be about the Roadrunners, the stage at the Alamodome and the celebration of Armed Forces and Veterans. Instead, the most important detail was the one that came before the opening whistle: a service member needed help, and the situation remained unresolved after he was taken away for treatment.
