CFB Wainwright response

The Canadian Armed Forces said, "At approximately 1600 on 17 October 2026, a fire was reported on the range at Canadian Armed Forces Base Wainwright. The fire has extended beyond the boundary of the training area and emergency services are responding." It also said, "The situation remains ongoing. The Canadian Armed Forces is working with emergency services to respond to the incident. Further information will be provided as it becomes available."

Capt. Bechard, a Canadian Support Group West public affairs officer, said, "There has been an incident on the base" and added, "Emergency personnel are attending the scene." The base statement put the fire outside the training area, which widened the response beyond the range itself.

Municipal District of Wainwright

The Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61 said the fire crossed the base fence earlier Saturday and that the active fire area was south of Township Road 44-0. The district also said high winds spread the fire rapidly, and that firefighting resources from multiple jurisdictions were responding.

At the time of the report, there was no evacuation order. Emergency crews were focused on protecting people, homes and other structures in the area, which made the boundary crossing the key operational change for residents near the fire line.

STARS and Wainwright

Natalie Hofstetter, communications manager with STARS, said, "I can confirm STARS has responded to a scene call in the Wainwright area with our Edmonton and Saskatoon-based aircraft. I don’t have any patient related information at this time, but can provide you with an update once any transports conclude. For information about the scene, please reach out to RCMP."

That left the immediate public question centered on the fire itself: what caused it on the range, and whether there were injuries or damage, was not addressed in the information released as the response continued in Wainwright.
