Oregon’s quarterback situation has shifted from temporary adjustment to genuine competition, and the Dante Moore injury is still the reason the Ducks are here in the first place. What began as a one-game absence in Week 4 has now turned into a broader evaluation of who gives Oregon the best chance to beat Nebraska this Saturday.

Moore suffered a head injury against USC in Week 4 and was later ruled out, opening the door for Dylan Raiola to make a start the following week. Raiola helped close out a win at USC, and after a Week 5 bye he was named the Week 6 starter. But last Saturday, in the loss to UCLA, he was benched for Brock Thomas in the fourth quarter. By Friday, CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz reported that Oregon was trending toward starting Thomas over Raiola against Nebraska.

That is a notable turn, not just because it changes the depth chart, but because it shows how quickly Oregon is willing to move when the offense stalls. Dan Lanning said earlier this week that Akili Smith Jr. was absolutely part of the quarterback competition, and on Wednesday he added that all things were on the table against Nebraska. That language matters. It suggests Oregon is no longer treating the position as settled, but as a week-to-week decision shaped by performance and circumstance.

Why the Ducks are making the switch

The simplest explanation is also the most important one: Oregon needs production, not labels. Raiola’s line against UCLA did not force the issue by itself, but the fourth-quarter benching made clear that the staff was willing to look elsewhere. Thomas now appears to be the next option, with Akili Smith Jr. still in the mix.

Lanning has already framed the process as one based on winning, not loyalty. His comment that it is worth evaluating whether Thomas should move above Raiola fits that approach. When a coach says all things are on the table, that usually means the staff believes the answer is still out there somewhere.

The Dante Moore injury has not only removed one quarterback from the picture; it has changed the shape of the entire discussion. Oregon is no longer choosing between stability and upside. It is choosing among options, hoping one of them gives the offense a cleaner path against Nebraska.

That is the reality of quarterback depth in October. A head injury in Week 4 can ripple through Weeks 5 and 6, and by the time a new opponent arrives, the pecking order can already look very different. For Oregon, the next answer may be Brock Thomas. The larger question is whether that answer lasts beyond this Saturday.
