The leaderboard at Delhi Golf Club was still shifting when darkness brought the third round to a halt, but one thing was already clear: Eugenio Chacarra had taken control of the DP World India Championship. The Spaniard birdied four of his first seven holes and was two shots clear after 11 holes when play was suspended, leaving the tournament unfinished and the Race to Dubai picture still open.
That matters because Chacarra is not just chasing a title, he is also trying to overhaul Patrick Reed at the top of the season-long Race to Dubai standings. At the moment of the stoppage, the leader was in the strongest position on the course and in the broader season race, even if Sunday now has to settle both stories. The unfinished nature of the round only adds to the pressure on the players still on the course, because a two-shot cushion can feel very different once the restart begins.
Rory McIlroy was among the players trying to build momentum before the light went. After a bogey-free second-round 68, he dropped four shots in four holes from the third before recovering with a birdie at the seventh. He then gave some of that work back with back-to-back bogeys at the ninth and 10th, before an eagle at the 14th pulled him back into the conversation. Patrick Reed, meanwhile, had completed 13 holes and sat two shots ahead of McIlroy when play stopped.
There is still plenty to sort out when the third round resumes at 02:05 BST on Sunday, but the broad shape of the day is already visible. Chacarra has the lead, the chase pack has unfinished business, and the weather has ensured that nobody gets the luxury of a clean finish on Saturday. That is the awkward edge of a stop-start tournament: the numbers are real, but the final meaning has to wait until the course allows the round to end.
