Luke Grimes Moves Marshals Episode 3 Forward with Jimmy Return

Marshals Episode 3 pushes Jefferson White back into the story as Jimmy, and Luke Grimes says Kayce turns to him for help while trying to handle his ranch, Tate, and marshal duties. The move gives Marshals season 2 a second lead relationship that did not exist in Yellowstone.

Kayce Turns to Jimmy

Luke Grimes said Kayce is having a hard time “juggling” “running this ranch, being a father [and] being a marshal,” which is why Jimmy comes back into his orbit in Marshals season 2. Grimes added, “Jimmy feels he has a debt to John Dutton for saving his life and putting him on this great new path, and making him into this cowboy. Out of the debt to that, he comes to help Kayce out.”

That setup matters because it gives Jimmy a job to do instead of a cameo slot. A recurring run can pull him into more than one scene with Kayce, which is a cleaner way to build a side storyline than dropping him in for a single appearance and moving on.

Yellowstone Never Gave Them Time

Grimes said Kayce and Jimmy “didn't have any relationship” in Yellowstone and “barely ever” shared scenes, with Kayce largely “in my own sort of world.” Marshals season 2 changes that by pairing them inside the same operational space, so the new dynamic is being built on overlap rather than inherited history.

That is the real narrative shift: the two characters are no longer separated by the structure of Yellowstone. Instead, Jimmy is being used as part of Kayce’s working life, which gives the spin-off a fresh connection without needing to rewrite what came before.

Ash Santos on Jefferson White

Ash Santos said White has “such vivacious energy” when filming a scene and is “so bright” that he “kind of lights the whole set up.” She also said, “I love the little improv he throws into the scenes, because it's always so funny,” and added that Jimmy and Andrea have already had “a few scenes together thus far.”

That gives Marshals season 2 a practical advantage: White is not just returning as Jimmy, he is arriving with on-set chemistry and material already in motion. For a recurring role, that usually means the character is being woven into the season’s rhythm instead of treated as a one-off callback.

Montana and the new pairing

Jimmy’s return also fits the show’s geography. He moved to Texas toward the end of his original series tenure, while Dutton Ranch shifted the setting to the Lone Star State and Marshals stayed rooted in Montana. Bringing him back now puts a familiar character into a new working arrangement with Kayce, and that is the part worth watching.

If Marshals season 2 keeps Jimmy in recurring mode, the show is choosing utility over nostalgia. That is the smarter play: give Kayce a partner he did not have before, use the debt to John Dutton as the engine, and let the scenes do the rest.
