Zack Wimbush on the wing for Toulouse trip — Toulouse Vs Exeter is a brutal test of Exeter Chiefs' depth

This is not the kind of afternoon where you ease a rookie into things and hope the margins take care of themselves. Toulouse vs Exeter in the Investec Champions Cup is a proper European stress test, and Exeter Chiefs have handed Zack Wimbush a role that asks a lot of him from the first whistle.

Rob Baxter has not tried to dress it up. Away to Toulouse, there are probably not many greater challenges in club rugby, and he is right. Toulouse are the Top 14 champions, they have been crowned French champions six times in the last eight years, and they are the sort of side that keeps showing up in both domestic and European competition. That is exactly why this game matters. Exeter got back into the Champions Cup last season and one of the clear drivers was a good year built on control, belief and a sense that they belonged at this level again. Sunday afternoon will tell us plenty about whether that still holds when the opposition is Toulouse.

A reshuffled back three under real pressure

The selection is bold because it is forced, but that does not make it any less demanding. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso picked up a hamstring injury in Exeter Chiefs' first Gallagher PREM win of the season against Newcastle Red Bulls last weekend, and that left Baxter needing answers on the edge of the field. Wimbush has been named on the wing for the trip, in what is only his second appearance in that position and his first start of the season.

That is a lot to ask of any player, never mind a rookie outside centre being pushed into an unfamiliar role against one of the most consistent sides in Europe. Exeter can only hope the change does not leave them exposed early, because Toulouse are exactly the kind of team that sniff out hesitation. If the spacing is wrong, if the defensive decisions are a touch slow, if the back three is even slightly disconnected, they will punish it.

And that is the real issue here. Baxter has made clear that Exeter will need a much bigger defensive work-rate than they managed last weekend, while also backing them to be dangerous in attack if the foundation is right. That is sensible enough, but it is also the classic Champions Cup contradiction: defend better, carry threat, survive the pressure, and do it all against a side that rarely offers you much breathing room.

There is no shame in respecting the challenge, because this one deserves it. Toulouse at home are not a fixture for romantic ideas or hopeful guesses. They are the benchmark. If Exeter can keep the game honest, if the reshuffled back line holds together, and if Wimbush handles the occasion, then the visitors will have something to build on. If not, the scale of the task will be obvious very quickly.

Baxter has asked for strong defensive foundations, and he is right to do so. But the hard truth is that Toulouse vs Exeter is exactly the sort of match where foundations are tested to breaking point. Exeter Chiefs have put Zack Wimbush in the frame. Now they need the selection gamble to hold.
