This is the sort of selection problem managers secretly love and publicly pretend is simple. It is not simple at all. Christian Pulisic's presence for Milan Vs Atalanta gives Ruben Amorim a genuine headache, because Alphadjo Cisse has done everything he possibly can to force his way into the picture — and still may not get the start he wants.
Cisse has at least made the conversation unavoidable. On Thursday, the 19-year-old tore Salzburg apart with a hat-trick, the kind of return that turns a promising name into a genuine selection issue. That came after August 15th, when Ruben Amorim started Goncalo Ramos and Alphadjo Cisse together in a friendly against Manchester United in Wroclaw and both men scored in a 4-2 win. Since then, though, the picture has shifted. Tonight, Goncalo Ramos is expected to return at the centre of the attack against Atalanta, and that immediately squeezes the space available to Cisse.
Why Cisse is suddenly under pressure
The key point is straightforward: Cisse's form has created pressure, but it has not guaranteed him a place. That is the harsh reality of top-level team selection. A hat-trick against Salzburg is a strong argument, not a guarantee. If Ramos is restored as the central striker, then someone else has to move aside, and Christian Pulisic is the player whose role may end up shaping the final decision.
That is why this feels like more than a simple rotation debate. It is also a reflection of how Milan are managing a young player whose form has clearly impressed people at Milanello. There is even talk of a potential renewal involving Alphadjo Cisse, and his recent displays have helped convince Milan to keep him at Milanello rather than send him out on loan. That is a significant vote of confidence. But it does not automatically translate into a start against Atalanta.
Pulisic changes the calculation
Pulisic is the reason this is not a clean, obvious call. His record against Atalanta is one win, two draws and four defeats, with 0 goals, and that is exactly the sort of detail that matters when a manager is deciding how much trust to place in a given attacking shape. If Pulisic is involved in the starting XI, the balance changes. If Ramos is restored, the balance changes again. And in that traffic jam, Cisse is the one who can be pushed to the edge.
None of this means Cisse has done anything wrong. Far from it. He has done the difficult part already by turning a strong run of form into a real debate. But the better the squad looks on paper, the more ruthless the choice becomes. Milan do not need sentiment here. They need the right attacking combination for a serious test against Atalanta.
That is why Cisse is not guaranteed to start. He has earned attention, and maybe more than that. But with Ramos expected back in the middle and Pulisic affecting the structure around him, Milan now have a selection puzzle that is much more interesting than anyone would have predicted a week ago.
