American Football: Five of the top seven AP teams lost on one Saturday in a historic shake-up

American football delivered a day the sport had never seen before in the regular season, with five of the seven highest-ranked teams in the Top 25 losing on the same Saturday. It was an unprecedented shake-up at the top of the poll and one that is set to reshape College Football Playoff seeding projections.

The scale of the chaos was striking. Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame and Indiana all lost on 2026-10-17, while Miami beat Florida State 43-35 in double overtime and moved into position to rise to No. 1. That combination of results made the day unlike anything in regular-season history.

A historic collapse at the top

Sportradar said five of the eight best teams had lost on the same day before, dating back to 2 January 1989. But this was different, because it involved five of the top seven teams in the Top 25 losing on the same Saturday during the regular season for the first time ever.

The loss spread was wide, but the SEC felt the brunt of it. Georgia had been the last undefeated team in the conference before falling to Auburn, and the SEC said Georgia, Alabama and Texas had not all lost on the same Saturday since 1996-10-26. That only underlined how rare the day was for the sport’s biggest conferences and biggest brands.

Auburn, Miami and the ripple effect

Auburn’s 27-24 win over Georgia was sealed by Alex McPherson’s last-play 34-yard field goal, and Alex Golesh said his team would keep moving forward after the upset. His message was straightforward: the Tigers had simply kept going, and they would try to get Auburn back to where everybody wants Auburn to be, one game at a time.

Elsewhere, Miami’s double-overtime win over Florida State added to the sense of a weekend that could reset the national picture. With so many contenders falling in the same window, the Top 25 is almost certain to change sharply, and the College Football Playoff debate will follow with it.

There is still a long way to go, but this Saturday already feels like one of those days that the sport will keep referencing. In a season built around margin for error, five of the top seven teams losing on the same day is the kind of result that can alter both the rankings and the path to the playoff.
