Rico Dowdle active for Week 6 after missing three games — Buccaneers Vs Steelers now has another wrinkle

This is not the kind of return that changes the entire shape of a game, but it does add another layer to a Steelers backfield that has already spent most of the season refusing to sit still. Rico Dowdle is active for Sunday’s Week 6 matchup against the Buccaneers after missing the last three games because of a toe dislocation, and that alone is a meaningful development for a team still sorting out its running-back pecking order.

The broader picture is fairly simple. During the first two games of the season, Rico Dowdle and Jaylen Warren were working in a true timeshare. Then Dowdle disappeared for three games, Warren handled the lead-back role, and the offense kept moving without much need to force the issue. That is the reality Dowdle is walking back into: not a clean handover, but a competition that was already tilting in Warren’s direction by the time the injury hit.

Dowdle is back — but the job is not automatically his

That matters because availability is not the same thing as control. Dowdle being active on Sunday is obviously good news, especially after he was listed as a full participant on Thursday and Friday, which suggested optimism around his return. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network described that optimism as real, and the Steelers clearly felt comfortable enough to dress him for the Buccaneers game. But a return from injury does not erase what happened while he was out. Warren’s production during Dowdle’s absence kept him in the lead-back role, and there is no reason to assume that changes just because Dowdle is back on the sheet.

There is also the matchup itself. The Buccaneers run defense is the kind of test that can make a backfield rotation look far more complicated than it already is. If Dowdle is going to reclaim meaningful work, this is not exactly the soft landing spot. It is one thing to re-enter a backfield in theory; it is another to do it against a stout front that can force every touch to be earned the hard way.

Steelers availability still has moving parts

Dowdle was not the only name worth watching through the week. Metcalf missed practice on Friday because of an illness before the Steelers removed him from the injury report on Saturday. Wilson was placed on injured reserve on Saturday. Pat Freiermuth was added to the injury report on Saturday and listed as questionable, then was active on Sunday as well. So while Dowdle’s return is the headline, it sits inside a broader injury picture that still has enough moving pieces to matter.

That is why this should be read as a useful development rather than a dramatic shift. The Steelers have another available back, which helps. But Warren has already done the work of establishing himself during Dowdle’s absence, and Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers is more likely to clarify the rotation than overturn it. Dowdle being active is important. Dowdle immediately becoming the focal point again? That is a much bigger leap.
