The Falcons got a positive Falcons injuries update on Friday: Michael Penix Jr. was fully cleared to take the field as QB1 this weekend after a rib issue briefly knocked him out of the Week 6 game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Penix was hurt late in Atlanta's game against Baltimore, and the discomfort was serious enough that he had an MRI earlier this week. Still, the signs pointed in the right direction throughout the week. On Wednesday, Kevin Stefanski said Penix was on track to start Sunday barring a setback, and by Thursday he was listed as a full participant on the injury report for a second consecutive day.
What the clearance means for Atlanta
Friday's injury report removed the question entirely. Penix had no injury designation, which means the Falcons can move into Sunday with their starting quarterback available after the scare in Week 6. That matters for a team that has already seen what Penix can do when he is healthy and operating within the offense.
Penix made his highly anticipated 2026 debut in Week 3 and helped Atlanta earn its first win of the season. In Week 4, he threw for 223 yards while Bijan Robinson rushed for 145 in a win over the New Orleans Saints. Across the past three games, Penix has thrown for 719 yards and three touchdowns, and the Falcons scored a league-high 80 points combined in Weeks 3 and 4.
Why this matters now
The timing is important because Atlanta has started to build momentum with Penix back in the lineup. A short absence would have complicated that, especially with the quarterback working through an injury history that has been well documented since his college days. Instead, the Falcons now have confirmation that their top option is ready to go.
One other comparison from the week helped frame the situation. Caleb Williams had missed the past three games before the latest injury-report updates, which made Penix's quick return to full clearance stand out even more. For the Falcons, the takeaway is simple: after a brief scare, their quarterback is set to play Sunday unless something changes.
