Za'Darius Smith clears concussion protocol, stays limited with neck injury in Atlanta Falcons Injury update

Za'Darius Smith's injury status took a step in the right direction on Thursday, when the Atlanta Falcons defensive end was listed as limited in practice with only a neck injury remaining. Smith had been dealing with a concussion and neck issue after leaving last week's win over the Saints, and the latest report indicates he has cleared concussion protocol.

That is a meaningful update for the Falcons as they prepare for Sunday's game against the Bears. Smith already missed last Sunday night against the Ravens, so Thursday's practice designation suggests there is at least a realistic path for him to return this week if the neck issue continues to improve.

What Smith's status means for Atlanta

Even with the concussion concern removed, Smith's availability is still not fully settled. A limited practice designation means the Falcons are still monitoring his recovery, but it also gives them a better chance of having another edge option available in Week 5.

The Falcons have had other injury matters to manage as well. Michael Penix Jr. was a full participant in his second consecutive practice on Thursday after injuring his ribs in Sunday's overtime loss, while C.J. Henderson did not participate for the second straight day.

In the secondary, Jeff Ulbrich has already pointed to other options, saying Mike Hughes is a top-end starter in this league and that Avieon Terrell is emerging. For now, though, the clearest development in Atlanta's injury report is Smith's improved status, with concussion protocol no longer part of the equation heading into Sunday.
