Za'Darius Smith clears concussion protocol, remains limited with neck injury in Falcons Player Injury update

The encouraging part of this Falcons player injury update is obvious: Za'Darius Smith has cleared concussion protocol. The frustrating part is just as clear: he is still not fully out of the woods, because the issue is now listed as a neck injury and his availability for Sunday remains a live question.

That is the cleanest read on Thursday's report from Flowery Branch, Ga. Smith went from concussion/neck to just neck, which is progress in the narrowest sense, but he was still limited in practice. For a player who had already missed Sunday's overtime loss to the Ravens after leaving the previous week's win over the Saints with the injury, any positive movement matters. It just does not yet mean he is ready to be counted on.

A status change, but not a full return

The important detail is that the concussion part has now been removed. That is not nothing. It changes the conversation from medical uncertainty to something more specific and, on the surface, more manageable. But the Falcons still stopped well short of saying Smith is ready to ramp up fully, and limited participation is exactly what it sounds like: a cautious step, not a declaration of readiness.

So yes, there is progress. But this is not the kind of progress that lets a coaching staff breathe easy. Smith missed the game against Baltimore, and with Sunday’s matchup against the Bears looming, Atlanta would plainly like to know whether one of its defensive fronts can be restored to full strength. At the moment, the answer is still somewhere between maybe and not yet.

The bigger injury picture in Atlanta

This was not a report focused on Smith alone. The Falcons were also managing other injuries at quarterback and cornerback, which only adds to the sense that this is a team trying to stay upright through a crowded injury list. Michael Penix Jr. was a full participant in practice for the second consecutive day after saying Wednesday that he was on the mend and feeling better from the rib injury he suffered Sunday night against the Ravens.

That at least gives Atlanta something it badly needs: some stability at quarterback. But on the defensive side, Smith's update is still more cautionary than comforting. Jeff Ulbrich has already made it clear that Mike Hughes is a top-end starter in this league and that Avieon Terrell is emerging, which tells you the Falcons are leaning on depth and development where they can. They would much prefer not to be doing the same thing with a proven veteran pass rusher if they can avoid it.

For now, the story is straightforward. Za'Darius Smith is no longer being listed with a concussion, which is a step forward. He is still limited, still dealing with the neck issue, and still not someone the Falcons can safely pencil in for Sunday just yet.
