The Buffalo Bills are heading into Raiders Vs Bills with a defensive problem that is no longer hiding in plain sight. It is front and center. Jim Leonhard said as much, and there is no way to dress it up: through the first five games, Buffalo has not shown the improvement or consistency he wants, and the numbers back him up.

This is not just a minor wobble. The Bills enter Week 6 ranked 30th in total defense, 31st in first downs allowed per game, 31st in pass defense and 28th in points allowed. Yes, the run defense has been better at 15th, but that only sharpens the point. Buffalo is still giving away too many easy yards and too many easy answers when the pressure rises.

Leonhard did not sound interested in excuses. His message was simple: the defense is too inconsistent to pretend the unit is steadily building toward something reliable. He said everything is being evaluated, starting with every decision he is making, because the team has to put players in better positions to succeed. That is not coach-speak. That is a coach telling you the current setup is not good enough.

The bigger issue is that Buffalo has already started making changes, which tells you how urgent this feels internally. In Week 5, Leonhard inserted CB Davison Igbinosun into the starting lineup and platooned him with CB Max Hairston opposite CB Christian Benford. Then Christian Benford returned from a toe injury on Monday night and played, giving the Bills another moving part in a secondary that is still searching for stability.

The problem is not effort. It is sustainability.

Leonhard’s point on Monday night was the part that matters most. The Bills can produce stretches of decent football. They can get things done in bursts. What they have not done is sustain it for 60 minutes, or 60 minutes plus in the case of Monday night. That is the difference between a unit that survives and a unit that actually controls games.

Joe Brady’s comments only underline the same reality from another angle. He said the key is for players not to press, to trust the scheme and to improve their situational awareness. In other words, Buffalo still believes the answers are in the building. Maybe they are. But belief is not the same thing as production, and Week 6 is arriving before the defense has earned much trust.

Leonhard said he has faith in the coaches and players to make the needed adjustments, but he also made the warning clear: if the answers are not here, then there need to be big conversations. For now, the Bills have to fix it with the players they have and the game plans they can execute. That is the uncomfortable truth of Raiders Vs Bills. Buffalo is not merely trying to win a game. It is trying to prove its defense can finally look like something more than a weekly work in progress.
