Amanda Bland resigns from Reform UK Scotland, cuts party to third

Amanda Bland has resigned from Reform UK Scotland and will sit as an independent MSP. The move leaves Reform UK Scotland with one member fewer than Labour at Holyrood and removes the party’s first MSP in Scotland just months after its electoral breakthrough.

Bland represents Central Scotland and Lothians West as a list MSP. In May, 17 Reform candidates were returned to the Scottish Parliament, and after that election Reform finished in joint second with Labour behind the SNP on 58 seats.

Her departure matters because list MSPs are tied to the party list used at the election. Under Holyrood’s rules, if a list MSP resigns, the party’s next candidate from that list would take the seat. Reform UK Scotland has said Bland should step down from parliament and allow her constituents to be represented by the next Reform candidate on that list.

A Reform spokesperson said Bland should reflect on her reasons for choosing to isolate herself from that team of capable individuals. The same spokesperson said, “It is incumbent on her to resign as a regional MSP for Central Scotland and Lothians West and allow her constituents to be represented by the next Reform candidate on that list.”

The party’s position at Holyrood changes immediately because Bland’s resignation reduces its numbers before any separate decision on whether she leaves parliament. That leaves Reform behind Labour in the parliamentary balance and strips it of the MSP it won in Central Scotland and Lothians West.

Amanda Bland has not yet commented publicly. For voters in Central Scotland and Lothians West, the practical issue now is whether she remains in Holyrood as an independent MSP or follows Reform UK Scotland’s call to vacate the seat and trigger the list process linked to her election in May.
