Peter Jackson says Tintin 2 is already scripted, and he says it will be the next film he makes. The update came while he was discussing two Lord of the Rings projects at the Sitges Film Festival, where his immediate slate is now easier to read: one production is nearly done, one is still on the page, and one has moved to the front of the line.
“We have The Shadow of the Past, which is in the scriptwriting stage. The Hunt for Gollum is almost finished filming. I think there are about two weeks of shooting left. And we've also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make,” Jackson said at the Sitges Film Festival. That puts a concrete order on his queue, not just a list of projects.
Sitges Film Festival update
2026 is the year Jackson was presented with the Honorary Grand Prize at the Sitges Film Festival, and the setting gave his comments extra weight. He used the same appearance to separate projects that are already in motion from the one that will come after them, which is the kind of production roadmap studios, investors, and audiences actually watch for. The practical takeaway is simple: Tintin 2 has crossed from idea to script, and Jackson is treating it as the next film on his slate.
Two weeks is all that remains on The Hunt for Gollum, according to Jackson, and that makes Tintin 2 the odd piece in the order of operations. The Lord of the Rings film is filming in New Zealand, with Andy Serkis set to direct and reprise Gollum, while Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace are also set to return. Anya Taylor-Joy, Leo Woodall, Jamie Dornan, and Kate Winslet have joined the cast, which means the production is still the one with the clearest near-term momentum.
Shadow of the Past script
The Shadow of the Past remains in scriptwriting, and Jackson’s comments leave it behind Tintin 2 in the release order he described. Stephen Colbert and Philippa Boyens are still developing that script, and the project is set to take place 14 years after Frodo has passed away. That timeline alone signals a very different narrative lane from the current Gollum film, which is another reason Jackson’s decision to name Tintin 2 as next is the real programming note here.
Warner Bros. recently shared new photos from The Hunt for Gollum, which keeps attention on the film that is closest to wrapping. But Jackson’s own sequence is the point: finish the Gollum shoot, then move to the Tintin sequel, then keep shaping The Shadow of the Past. For readers tracking what he makes next, the answer is already on the record, and it is not one of the Lord of the Rings titles.
