Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias said on September 28 that he is working on the club’s baseball operations staffing as the organization continues its search for a new GM.
Elias, who took over as the Orioles’ GM in 2019, made the comments during a press conference at Camden Yards. When asked about the front office, he said, “That’s something that I’m working on right now,” adding that he is focused on “overall staffing to the baseball operations department.”
Why the Orioles’ front office matters
The timing is notable because Elias has been the architect of Baltimore’s recent rise. The Orioles had their first winning season in six years in 2022, then followed that with a 101-win season and a postseason berth in 2023. The club has been on the cusp of yearly postseason contention in recent seasons, which makes any front-office uncertainty more important than it might be for a rebuilding team.
That is part of why a new GM search can be complicated. Candidates may want clarity about authority and decision-making, especially if there is a possibility of interference from higher up. Even with Elias still in place, the structure around him will matter to anyone evaluating the job.
For now, the key takeaway is that Baltimore is still shaping its baseball operations group while Elias remains at the center of the process. That leaves the Orioles with an important question moving forward: how the front office will be organized as the team tries to sustain its recent success.
