Anderson said the boil-water advisory for parts of downtown Clinton was rescinded on Wednesday after bacteriological samples came back clean. The warning had covered residents and businesses along Sycamore Street, Wall Street, Elizabeth Street and McKoy Street after a water main leak disrupted service.
Downtown Clinton repairs
City of Clinton Public Work crews replaced a water main in front of the Sampson County Courthouse on Wednesday after the line began leaking on Monday. Anderson said the crews first cut asphalt and dug down to the main on Tuesday, then took samples for laboratory analysis before the advisory was lifted.
He said four inline water valves were installed under pressure on Wednesday, giving crews the ability to isolate the work area during the replacement. The repair included 16 feet of PVC piping, and service in the affected blocks was shut off while crews located and fixed the leak.
Fayetteville Street work
Anderson said repaving work along Fayetteville Street likely caused a section of cast iron waterline pipe to break earlier this week, but he also said, "We can’t really point the finger at" the cause and added, "old infrastructure…it’s kind of coincidental." He said the new valves will "provide the ability to isolate and minimize the number of effected areas when similar situations" arise again.
By Thursday morning, Anderson said the asphalt had been back-filled, tamped, prepped and prepared for paving, and paving restarted Thursday and continued into Friday. The work left the downtown stretch open again after the leak, testing and replacement work were completed in sequence.
