Slow Horses season 7 new cast now includes five additions, and James Callis is returning as Claude Whelan. Radio Times revealed the move while one episode of season 6 is still to come, putting the new season’s roster in place before the next stretch of the series lands.
Five names for Bad Actors
Varada Sethu, Ethan Moorhouse, Tuppence Middleton, Merab Ninidze, and Joshua McGuire have joined the season 7 cast. That is the kind of cast expansion that signals a story built around infiltration and pressure rather than a narrow character reset, especially with season 7 set to adapt Mick Herron’s Bad Actors.
Merab Ninidze’s return is the sharpest continuity note in the group. He appeared in season 6 in a minor voice role as KGB spymaster Vassily Rasnokov, so this update folds a previously small presence back into the series’ larger machinery without yet saying how the part will be used.
Claude Whelan returns
James Callis is back as Claude Whelan, the former MI5 First Desk who left at the end of season 5 and has not been seen since. Bringing him back gives the new season a clear institutional link to the show’s earlier power shifts, rather than relying only on fresh faces to carry the story.
Gary Oldman will also return as Jackson Lamb, and the season 7 synopsis places Lamb and his Slow Horses in a hunt to find and neutralise a mole at the heart of British Government before the state is brought down. For viewers, the important detail is not just that the ensemble is growing; it is that the series is restoring a missing authority figure while widening the field around Lamb.
Season 8 already set
The new cast additions were revealed before the characters they will play have been disclosed, which leaves the season’s structure intact but its internal lineup incomplete. An eighth season based on Mick Herron’s Clown Town has already been set, so the series is not waiting for season 7 to prove its value before moving deeper into the books.
For now, the practical takeaway is simple: season 7 is building around five new names, one returning power player, and a plot that leans on internal betrayal. That is enough to make this more than a routine cast update, even if the roles themselves are still being held back.
